Masjid Agung (Agung Mosque)

Agung means "Super", "Masjid Agung" is one of Palembang's sultanate archeological remains. It was founded by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I or Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jaya Wikramo. this mosque was build from 1738 to 1748. They said that "Masjid Agung" was the biggest mosque Indonesian archipelago in that time.

Used to the widht of "Masjid Agung" was 1.080 m2, It could hold 1.200 assembly. The first expansion was done by lord Nataagama Kara Mangala Mustafa Ibnu Raden Kamaluddin.

In 1819 and 1821, the reparation was done by Dutch goverment, after the reaparation, In 1893, 1916, 1950, 1970 and the last 1990 this mosque re-expanded. In expansion in 1966-1969 by institute of Masjid Agung, they build by adding the second floor in Masjid Agung so that the widht of Masjid Agung was 5.520 m2 and can hold 7.750 communities. In 1970 Masjid Agung renovate again by adding the tower as seen now. Besides that tower, Masjid Agung has any other origin tower that adopted from chinese style building.

The superiorities of Masjid Agung

Masjid Agung Palembang has a special architectur, the roof of it is like pyramid with chinese nuance. The architect of Masjid Agung was European people,  Some of maerials building like glass and marble were imported from Europ. So, the architecture of Masjid Agung was combined with chinese and Europ architecture.

Masjid Agung Palembang is located in KH Faqih Usman street, Palembang.
